What to Expect from Online and Telephone Counselling
Starting counselling can feel like a big step, especially when it’s not face-to-face. Whether we meet over video or by phone, I aim to offer a space where you can be yourself and speak freely, at your own pace.
You don’t have to show up a particular way or have the perfect words. You just have to show up as you are.

Online Counselling
Online counselling takes place over Zoom, a secure and confidential video platform. I’ll send you a link the day before each session and there’s no need to download anything unless you’d like to. All you need is:
• A computer, tablet, or phone with a camera
• A stable internet connection
• A quiet, private space where you feel comfortable to talk and won’t be overheard.
Each session lasts 1 hour. Many people find that video sessions offer the same depth and connection as being in the room together, with the added comfort and safety of being in their own familiar space.
Telephone Counselling
If you prefer not to use video, I also offer sessions by phone. This can be a gentler option if being on screen feels too much, or if you simply feel more able to open up without the camera.
We’ll agree a time and I’ll call you at the number you provide. You might find it helpful to:
• Choose a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted or overheard
• Use headphones for comfort and privacy
• Keep a drink and some tissues nearby
• Have a moment to settle yourself before and after the call
Some people find telephone counselling helps them connect more deeply to their thoughts and feelings, without the distraction of being seen.

What if I’m Unsure?
It’s completely natural to feel uncertain about starting counselling in this way. Many people wonder how it will feel to talk through a screen or over the phone, but often those worries begin to fade as we get to know each other.
If travelling to an appointment feels daunting – whether it’s the anxiety of going somewhere new, finding the time to get there, worrying about parking, or walking into an unfamiliar building – online and telephone counselling can lift those pressures. It allows you to focus fully on yourself, without those extra layers of stress.
If you’re feeling unsure, you’re not alone. We can talk it through first and find a way that helps you feel as comfortable as possible. You’re also welcome to try a free, no obligation session, simply to see how it feels. There’s no expectations, just a gentle space to explore whether it’s right for you.
A Few Tips to Settling In
- Choose a space where you feel safe and won’t be overheard
- Allow yourself a few quiet moments before and after the session
- Bring anything you need: a cuppa, a blanket, something to fidget with, a notebook
- There’s no pressure to have anything figured out, we’ll take it one step at a time

Still Have Questions?
I offer a 25 minute phone or video welcome session, so you can ask questions and get a feel for how I work. It’s also a chance to explore whether video or telephone counselling feels like the right fit for you. There’s no pressure to decide anything straight away, this is your space to come exactly as you are with no expectations.
